Whatsapp, Facebook and Instagram users are unable to download and share the media such as pictures, videos and voice recordings as it seems that the apps are down and appear to have stopped working since earlier today.

The interruption appears to be global, with media reports and tweets explaining that the issue is widespread across Europe, USA and Africa as well. In India, while the WhatsApp chat interface and Instagram posts and stories are active, transferring any form of media, including audio and images, appear to be stopped for now.

While sending of files are still active, which is hinting that this may be some sort of a widespread server glitch that is stopping individuals from downloading content that has been shared with them. Meanwhile, Facebook Inc., which owns each of these apps have tweeted regarding this issue that they are aware of this issue and they are working on it.

"We’re aware that some people are having trouble uploading or sending images, videos and other files on our apps. We're sorry for the trouble and are working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible," the tweet said.

As of 10:30PM IST, each of WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram have been inactive for nearly over three hours. While exchanging of text messages on WhatsApp in few countries remain possible, in other parts of the world, they have confirmed via their reports that WhatsApp is, in fact, completely down in Europe and USA. With no official update yet from Facebook Inc., there is no clarity on when these features might be restored.

The last time all three of Facebook's major services broke, the interruption lasted for many hours. It later claimed that there was a problem on a server issue that had an effect on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp as the three use shared infrastructure.

"As a result of a server configuration change, many people had trouble accessing our apps and services," it was posted on Twitter by Facebook Inc. after that previous interruption was fixed.

"We've now resolved the issues and our systems are recovering well. We’re very sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate everyone’s patience," they added.

When those problems happened in March, this year, they were said to be possibly the largest outage in the history of the internet, hitting millions of users.

“By duration, this is by far the largest outage we have seen since the launch of Downdetector in 2012,” Co-founder of Downdetector, Tom Sanders, told Techcrunch in the wake of that outage. “Our systems processed about 7.5 million problem reports from end users over the course of this incident. Never before have we such a large scale outage.”

However, this surely has caused the inconvenience the users in India as they are unable to download the media content in all the three platforms. The twitter users in India have shared their feelings about this interruption. Here are a few of those tweets:
While few of the users hailed Twitter as it was the only site which they were able to use without any issues.

  1. This is Cudjoe with www.omgvoices.com. I do believe the issue has been rectified even though this was something which got many uninstalling their apps and reinstalling thinking it was from their end. I was a victim as well.
