After Shikhar Dhawan's exit from the Cricket World Cup 2019 due to a thumb injury, he is now being joined by Vijay Shankar. Shankar, who suffered a "toe niggle" ahead of India's match against England in the World Cup 2019 clash on Sunday, has been ruled out of the tournament with a non-displaced fracture on his left big toe.

"Vijay got hit on the toe by a Jasprit Bumrah's yorker once again. His situation is not great and he won't be able to take part in the tournament" a senior BCCI official revealed. He is going back home," he added.

Karnataka opener Mayank Agarwal, 28, played his debut test match against Australia last year, is said to be the replacement for the injured all-rounder. Mayank is yet to play in the One-Day International (ODI) format.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has been approached by the BCCI already with the request and it has been approved. Shankar is on his way back to India while Mayank is on his way to London.

Mayank will be joining the team in Birmingham for the match against Bangladesh on Tuesday, July 2nd where India played against the hosts, England, with England breaking India's unbeaten streak in the world cup 2019.

Speaking ahead of the England game, Kohli praised Shankar and said: "So you can't really sit down and pinpoint things. But I personally felt that he (Shankar) looked really solid. There's not much that needs to be tinkered with. Sometimes in the game of cricket, you just need a bit of luck to get over from 30 to 60, and then you will need to play a defining knock for the team. He's very close to that, and we're very confident that he's going to end up playing that kind of knock for us."

Vijay Shankar was picked into the squad ahead of Ambati Rayudu due to his all-round ability to contribute with both bat and ball. He played a crucial role against Pakistan when he replaced injured Bhuvneswar Kumar by picking up 2 wickets and scored 15 not with the bat. He was selected into the team after an injury to Shikhar Dhawan left India needing another batsman in the playing XI.

However, he wasn't able to perform well in the remaining matches he played, despite getting a good start with the bat.

The Twitterati of India has shared their views on the replacement by finding the funny part in it.

Meanwhile, the men in blue are very much in the race to bag the semi-final spot with the team having two matches left (vs Bangladesh & vs Sri Lanka) and one win will seal the semi-final spot.
